Yes, the Northern Lights can sometimes be seen from the city center when the sky is clear and aurora activity is strong. However, city lights can make them more difficult to see. For a better chance and a darker view of the sky, we recommend heading outside the brightest city areas or joining a guided Northern Lights tour. The aurora season in Rovaniemi typically runs from late August to early April.

Most snow-based activities are seasonal and usually operate from November until April, depending on snow conditions. Northern Lights tours are also seasonal, as the summer nights in Rovaniemi are too light to see the auroras. However, Lapland has plenty to discover outside the winter season. Husky and reindeer farm visits, hiking, canoeing, fishing and other nature activities are available during the snow-free months, while autumn brings the return of Northern Lights tours.

You do not normally need previous snowmobiling experience. Before departure, your guide will provide instructions on how to operate the snowmobile and explain the relevant safety rules. To drive a snowmobile yourself, you must generally be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driving licence accepted in Finland. Licence requirements and accepted formats can vary between operators, so please check the conditions of your chosen safari before departure. Guests without a driving licence can often participate as passengers or, on suitable tours, travel in a sled pulled by the guide.

Some excursions include pickup directly from Arctic Light Hotel, while others use designated meeting or pickup points in Rovaniemi city center. As the hotel is centrally located, many of these meeting points are within easy reach. Please check the transfer and meeting point information for your chosen activity when booking.

Yes, it is recommended especially during the winter season. Popular activities such as husky and reindeer excursions, snowmobile safaris and Northern Lights tours can sell out during busy periods. Booking in advance gives you a wider choice of departure times and activities and makes it easier to plan your stay. Availability outside the main winter season can also be more limited, so advance booking is recommended throughout the year.

Winter clothing can also be rented separately in Rovaniemi. We recommend bringing warm base and mid layers suitable for Arctic conditions. Many winter activity providers include thermal outerwear, boots and gloves or mittens as part of their excursions.
